An extranuclear DNA present in mitochondria. Mitochondria are subcellular particles, which evolved from endosymbiotic bacteria, therefore their DNA shares a lot of similarities to bacterial DNA, such as it's circular state or lack of histones. The genome of human mitochondria has degenerated over time from its original form,>1Mb, to the size of 16 569bp, containing only 37 genes.
