Genes are information units composed of DNA and RNA. All forms of life carry genes and pass them on to their offspring through sexual or asexual reproduction. Some genes are transcribed and translated into proteins that perform numerous metabolic functions in a cell, these are called structural genes, others encode RNA molecules or are resposible for regulation of other genes or pathways. Together, they help the cell to function normally.
